Sweat lodges in Ireland

"

The sweat lodge is one of humanity's oldest forms of purification — a space to heal and integrate body, mind and spirit. Sweat ceremonies have been held across the world for centuries; in the Celtic lands they were known as sweat houses, and were used particularly by women to grieve, keen and cleanse — emotionally, spiritually and physically.

01

The shape of the ceremony

The structure of the lodge is intentionally womb-shaped: the bent interior poles are the ribs of the mother, the central fire her eternal heart. Sacred smoke carries our prayers and heart-songs back to the wisdom that holds all things, and ancestral wounds long-held in the body have a chance to soften and resolve.

Inside the lodge we are welcomed into the spiritual realms of our ancestors — invited to honour them, to celebrate our connection with them, and to engage with the influence they continue to hold in the present.

02

How a lodge runs

Traditional sweat lodges hold three or four rounds (or doors), each dedicated to a sacred direction and an aspect of the work — welcoming, cleansing, creation, gratitude. Each round runs 20–30 minutes (sometimes longer) as the elements and what is present in the lodge call for it.

Lodges at Danu are led by Ceolanna-Elizabeth Scott, who has been carrying sweat lodge ceremonies in Lakota and Celtic ways for over thirty years. They are held outside on the land at the lodge, gathered around a sacred fire.

Coming to a lodge

Lodges are physically intense and deeply gentle at once. You'll be guided through preparation, what to wear, what to bring, and how to look after yourself afterwards. They are open to first-timers and experienced sweat-lodge participants alike — see the events page for the next dates.
